Useful Study Tips...
PREVIEW THE LESSON! (Look at pictures to help you predict what you will be reading/learning about...Use text organization clues to : look at any titles/subtitles/headings, italic/bold/different colored text, pictures/captions, notes/questions in the margins/sides, review questions at the end of the reading)
* Do you have a good idea about what you are going to be reading & learning about??? TERRIFIC! :-)
READ THE LESSON! (Read the entire lesson... if you need to take any breaks, do so at an appropriate stopping point in the reading such as at a new title/subtitle/heading... NOT in the middle of a paragraph or section)
*Taking breaks after each section to monitor what you've read so far, ask/answer any questions to check your understanding, think about examples, etc. is a great "WHILE YOU READ" strategy :-)
*Explore different reading options... read silently or aloud to yourself, read aloud to an adult & discuss what you've read, read with a peer alternating sections
REVIEW THE LESSON! (Try to reread the entire lesson at least once using the methods mentioned above... AT THE VERY LEAST, spend some time looking over the text organization features again & answering review questions-- use the text & organizational features to find & locate the information...support it with examples that show your understanding!)
*Create vocabulary and/or concept flashcards so that you can WRITE & SEE the information you are learning about...say them aloud so that you also HEAR the information.
*Use the flashcards to play matching or memory games, or to quiz with a partner
*Use any graphic organizers that you have been given in class to review the information in a logical way--see if you can complete a blank organizer or add to the organizer on your own
DO YOUR HOMEWORK AND/OR CLASSWORK! (This work is not given as a punishment...it is given as a practice exercise for you to practice the knowledge & skills you've been learning about at home on your own...it also helps your teacher to know where your individual strengths & weaknesses lie, which in turn helps your teacher to provide more instructional support so that you understand better & learn! It is an important tool in the learning process!)
ASK QUESTIONS! (Asking questions helps you to reflect on what you understand &/or do not understand... ask as many & as often as necessary to get to a point where you feel confident that you understand! This also helps your teacher to monitor your understanding!)
